It caught the attention of New York’s young police commissioner, who, upon reading the book, pledged his help to assist Riis to right these wrongs and begin a wave of social reform that would ultimately change laws, attitudes, and lives. His name: Theodore Roosevelt.LET THE LIGHT SHINE, follows Jacob Riis from his arrival in New York City, through his darkest days on the verge of suicide to his eventual triumphs and global acclaim.
