Sam is a writer/director focusing stories about families, chosen and biological. He usually writes in the thriller, horror, dark comedy genres leading people to call his work funny/strange. His recent feature, Seaside, a revenge thriller with a queer twist, starring Ariana DeBose (Anita, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story; Alyssa, Ryan Murphy’s The Prom; original Hamilton cast) won Best Feature Award at the Yale in Hollywood and Klamath Film Festivals and was a 2019 Gravitas Ventures release. His first feature, You Belong to Me (Wolfe Releasing), a gay horror story, was shortlisted for the Independent Spirit Award’s Someone to Watch Award and screened at Frameline, Outfest, Palm Springs, San Diego FilmOut (Audience Award, Best First Feature), and NewFest (Honorable Mention). His short, How to Make it to the Promised Land, about a Holocaust role-play game at summer camp, was funded by the Jerome Foundation and premiered on ShortoftheWeek.com. He has created dozens of videos on breast cancer survivors, New York non-profits including Prep for Prep, Reach Prep, and Civic Builders, and campaign videos with the Creative Resistance. Jared, a high school football star, chooses conversion therapy after his secret boyfriend, Martin, moves away to escape bullying. But at Love Mercy Center, Jared discovers sadistic Pastor Tender tortures his patients in the name of a “cure” and decides he doesn’t want to change. And when he discovers Martin is also trapped at Love Mercy, Jared vows to save Martin and destroy Tender and his torture center.
