Derek Nelson comes from the small, rust-belt city of Reading, PA - having grown up in a log cabin in the woods that his dad built with his own bare hands. A National Honor Society student and captain of the in-school suspension team at Twin Valley High School, (the same cow farm high school that produced Youtube co-founder Chad Hurley) Nelson drove out by himself to Las Vegas three weeks after graduation - enrolling in college at UNLV and majoring in Acting for the Camera.
He immediately caused a scene with his performances, being told by one professor, “Out of all the students I’ve ever taught, you have by far the least inhibitions.” Despite a successful semester and a 4.0 GPA, Nelson felt like it was both a waste of time and money and dropped out. Four hours later, he landed one of the lead roles in TONY ’N’ TINA’S WEDDING at the Rio Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.
After 8 months of working the show and getting kicked out of UNLV for continuing to live in the dorms even after dropping out, Nelson quickly landed a supporting role in New York City for the feature film HAROLD starring Cuba Gooding Jr.
Now in Hollywood, Nelson recently created a web series based on his real-life adventures picking up women in gay bars, DOWN WITH DAVID. Ed Martin, the current President of the TV Critics Association, called the series "Abrasively funny and painfully profound.” Nelson has developed a TV series of DOWN WITH DAVID, which one assistant at Kaplan Stahler called “One of the most original concepts and series I’ve ever read."
In his spare time, Nelson is a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan and loves philosophy and a good conspiracy story.
