A wild agoraphobic from a backwater town in Louisiana moves to a hotel in the city to search for a cure for her illness, throwing the lives of everyone around her into chaos. Terrified of open spaces and crowds – and unable to leave the hotel – she turns to travel-writing to pay the bills by stealing the stories of hotel guests. As her pieces go viral, her desperation to cure herself grows, no matter what the cost, or to whom.On The Outs is an edgy irreverent character-driven traumedy with a take on mental illness closest to Silver Linings Playbook and the pace of Fleabag. Naturalism vibrating at a very high-frequency, the show revels in the freedom that desperation unleashes.
Based on creator Catherine Eaton's personal experience working in conflict zones: Wanting to see Syria first-hand, 20-something sound-woman Ren pops her “conflict zone” cherry by joining a news crew headed to a refugee camp, and can never quite go home again. The gig challenges her humanity, and she then has to rethread that needle over and over again as her growing addiction to the thrill of conflict zones makes returning to “civilian life” impossible. We’ve seen the images of conflict zones; these are the stories of those who capture them.
